7 Methods to Lower Your Heating Bill in Elkhart During the Winter

Your house is likely at the top of the list of your most valued investments. It assists you financially through improving equity, and it’s an area to watch your family grow and make memorable moments, too. During the winter, you may also be experiencing rising utility bills.

Consequently, finding methods to lower your heating bill in Birmingham without compromising comfort can seem challenging.

In regard to energy efficiency, homes are like motor vehicles. Some require a lot of energy while others sip it slowly. Regardless of what kind of residence you live in, there are ways to stop the chill this winter. The Experts are here with seven ideas to keep you comfy without driving up your energy bill.

1. Replace Your Your Air Filter

It’s the most economical solution there is. It’s also the best way to keep your heater functioning optimally through the winter.

The kind of filter and seasonal elements influence how frequently you should replace it. Increased allergen counts, pets and home size may also influence its life span. Typically, fiberglass filters should be replaced every month. Pleated styles made with better material may work for three months or longer.

“It’s really the big thing homeowners ignore,” said Jim Hughes, senior manager of education and training at Service Experts. “The more loaded up the filter is, the less air is able to go through it and actually heat the residence. An overloaded filter makes your furnace work harder.”

2. Schedule Routine HVAC Service

It’s normal to have a tech visit your home in the spring for AC service. That way, your system is prepped for the summer.

But don’t neglect to schedule an appointment for furnace service before it snows too.

Among other steps, an inspection commonly covers:

    • Examining thermostat settings
    • Cleaning and oiling internal components
    • Inspecting system shutdown and startup procedures

Maintenance helps decrease the probability of facing an emergency repair in the middle of winter. Some reports have shown as many as 75% of “no heat” calls could have been prevented with standard service.

3. Check Windows and Doors for Holes

Windows and doors are a leading entry point for frigid air. Sealing window and door frames is an economical way to help keep frigid air where it belongs.

Here’s one assessment that Hughes recommends.

Close a door. Do you notice any light? If so, it’s not totally sealed. Modifications or weather-stripping could be needed.

If your house has single-pane windows, you might want to think over a dual-pane improvement.

Some homeowners insulate single-pane windows with plastic wrap.

It’s not a bad solution, but dual-pane windows provide much better insulation for keeping chilled air outside.

When you switch to double-pane windows, your energy savings could be 25% or greater.

4. Regulate Use of Vented Appliances

If you require the exhaust fan while cooking, Hughes recommends against leaving it on for an extended period of time.

The same goes for for the dryer. Don’t permit it to work after your clothes are dry.

Any venting appliance or exhaust fan pulls out warm air away from your home and adds cold air. Running these appliances all the time will require your furnace to work harder to battle the avoidable cold.

5. Check Your Residence’s Outer Edges for Leaks

Check your home’s building envelope. This is the boundary that separates your home from the outside. If there’s a basement, watch for fluttering cobwebs or chilly air flowing in around the corners.

Polyurethane sealant and other options can be used to fix basement walls leaking air into your home. Another inexpensive move is to invest foam seals for fixture bases, like ceiling fans, overhead lights or wall outlets.

They’re quick to use and are great at keeping the cold air out in the winter.

6. Measure Insulation Levels in Your Attic

It’s worth making sure that you have thick enough insulation levels

Hughes advises checking the ENERGY STAR® zone map to find the recommended R-value for your home’s walls and attic space. This value is formulated on the geographic spot where your home is.
