What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

BW/Cook Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Elkhart always tells you about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds comforting, what does it actually mean?

NATE is an abbreviation for North American Technician Excellence and, according to their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization was developed nearly 20 years ago and is supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not everyone in the industry is required to be certified through NATE. The certification is discretionary and technicians can provide heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration services without being certified by NATE.

It’s important to BW/Cook Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning that our technicians are NATE-certified to ensure we are sending the most qualified and skilled technicians into your home. To make sure professionals meet these criteria, the NATE-certification exams validate real-world working knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems for technicians. The assessments are knowledge-based exams that assess the technician’s knowledge of these standards.

Since BW/Cook Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification instead of refrigeration, there are only certain areas pertinent to our technicians. NATE test candidates may earn installation and/or service certification in one or more of the skill areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Ground Source Heat Pump Loop Installer
  • Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst
